Harvard Today: January 30, 2015

Happy Friday and welcome to the end of shopping week. After battling a simple snow storm and cancellations, the end of the week is finally here. Study cards are due by 5 p.m at the latest to the your house (for upperclassmen) or ticknor lounge (for freshman). For those still trying to decide between classes, just consider how boring the professor is, how easy would it be to sneak out and if there is the chance to take selfies with any famous people. That’s a surefire way to find the best classes for you.

1) Cantor to Visit IOP as Visiting Fellow: “Former U.S. House of Representatives Majority Leader Eric I. Cantor will join the Institute of Politics this spring as a visiting fellow, the Institute announced on Thursday.”

2) Harvard Brings in Record-Breaking $1.16 Billion in FY 2014 Gifts: “For the first time since 2004, Harvard outraised Stanford in Fiscal Year 2014, posting a record-breaking total of $1.16 billion in gifts, according to a survey by the Council for Aid to Education.”

3) UC Leaders Lay Out Preliminary Goals: “In an interview Wednesday, the newly-elected pair said that their term will focus on creating more attainable and sustainable services for the student body and relying less heavily on administrators, in what they see as a contrast from their predecessors former UC President Gus A. Mayopoulos ’15 and former UC Vice President Sietse K. Goffard ’15.”

4) Federal Funding Initiative Could Bolster University’s Genomics Research: “Harvard genomics researchers could see increased funding for their work should Congress approve a White House proposal to allocate millions more dollars to the research of medical treatments personalized to a patient’s genetic information.”

1) Women's Basketball Rides Second Half Streak to Win Over Dartmouth: “Sophomore guard Fanni Szabo led the Dartmouth attack, registering a game-high 25 points in 39 minutes of play. She gave her squad its largest lead of the game with 6:21 left by knocking down a jumper to push the score to 62-48.”

2) Men's Volleyball Finishes Homestand with Straight Set Loss to IPFW: “The Harvard men’s volleyball team (1-3) finished out the weekend at home with a split after losing to No. 11 IPFW (5-2) in straight sets Saturday at the MAC..”

EVENTS

The First Generation Student Union will be holding a panel discussion today from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. called Navigating the Internship and Job Process from the First-Gen Perspective in Ticknor Lounge.

Harvard Women’s Varsity Basketball plays Princeton at home tonight at 7 p.m. at Lavietes Pavillion.
