Harvard Today: November 5, 2014

Happy Wednesday, Harvard! Hopefully those of you who are eligible had a chance to vote in yesterday’s midterms elections! For those of you who haven’t heard the results yet, overall, the night was a big win for Republicans, who maintained majority control in the House of Representatives, won a majority in the Senate, and won a large majority of the governor’s races taking place yesterday.

While elections have been taking up most people’s attention these past few days (at least any attention left over after classes, meetings, and more), there’s been a lot going on everywhere else in the world! Here’s what you may have missed:

1. Bol Authorized Study that Photographed Faculty, Students, in Class without Notice: Vice Provost for Advances in Learning Peter K. Bol admitted at Tuesday’s meeting of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences to using cameras placed in classrooms to take photographs of attendance without telling the surveilled faculty and students.

2. Faculty Unanimously Passes Motion Asking Corp. To Reverse Health Benefits Changes: Members of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences unanimously voted to request that University President Drew G. Faust and the Harvard Corporation reverse the new health benefits policy—unveiled earlier this year—on the eve of its planned implementation.

3. Five Tickets To Compete for UC Presidency, Vice Presidency: Five tickets will run in the upcoming Undergraduate Council elections, the highest number of competitors in the past six years. Of those tickets, presidential and vice presidential hopefuls Luke R. Heine ’17 and Stephen A. Turban ’17 are sophomores—a rare occurrence in a race that is typically dominated by juniors.

EVENTS

Head over to CGIS S050 at 2 p.m. today for an information session on obtaining summer internships with leading Chinese and multinational corporations and NGO/NPOs, organized by the Harvard China Fund.

Join IOP Fellow Kristin Soltis Anderson at her study group session today at 4 p.m. in IOP L166. She will be leading a discussion breaking down the results from yesterday’s midterm elections and analyzing what they mean for the future of politics.
