As someone who seems to always forget their umbrella, spring is not time of year I look forward to. However, there is no better remedy for spring blues than a playlist containing the full range of emotions that this transitional period entails. This playlist is designed to emulate spring in its inconsistency and can be your soundtrack for surprise walks in the rain, the season’s first 70-degree day, post-exam decompressing, and everything that springs in between.
“Better” by Maggie Rogers
Maggie Rogers is known for incorporating sounds sampled from nature. This track is no different, as Rogers encapsulates the hopeful and green newness of spring. “Better” is an introspective track with lyrics and instrumentals capturing familiar feelings of nostalgia and acceptance.
“Mushaboom” by Feist
This song is the perfect soundtrack for putting on your rain boots and jumping in puddles. The mud and damp clothes make rainy weather a drag, but this song will remind you of the hidden joy in spring showers.
“A Cup of Coffee” by Katy Perry
While lyrics “Over my dead body is how this will end” are a bit concerning if taken literally, Perry is able to capture the angst of spring's darker days. This indie-pop-rock song feels like a diary entry and validates being dramatic about emotions, especially pertinent to students going through a dreary spring semester.
“Bedache” by Christian Leave
For days when the unpredictable Boston weather leaves you at a loss for what to wear, “Bedache” is the perfect choice for days when you just need more sleep, more time, and less thinking.
“I Don’t Think I’m Ever Gonna Figure it Out” by Eliott Smith
This song details the internal battles and anxious feelings that are hard-hitting on gloomy days. The acoustic guitar on the track contrasts this, contributing to a catchy feel that balances the weight of the lyrics for a sound that suits the haze of spring.
“Wyoming” by Elijah Fox
Capturing the melancholy but soothing feeling of a cold rainy day, Elijah Fox’s piano performance lets the listener take a pause, breathe, and sit with whatever transitional feelings they may be grappling with.
“Scott Pilgrim vs. My GPA” by Mom Jeans
Rainy spring days call for midwestern emo. The horns in the chorus feel like the sun breaking through on a cloudy day, and reminding the listener that, just like the change of a season, each day can bring a fresh start.
“Expert in a Dying Field” by The Beths
This song will be your best friend when you're feeling a little angsty, anxious, and in need of a boost of energy. While upbeat songs in the spring can feel disingenuine to the mixed emotions in the air, this invigorating track will leave you with an extra pep in your step.
“Mannie’s Smile” by Her’s
Spring in college is the perfect time for romanticizing the little things, and what better soundtrack for that than an ’80s inspired indie-pop track to reflect on the things you will miss over the summer.
“Secret” by Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark
With a classic ’80s beat featuring vibrant synths, this track feels sentimental without becoming sappy. This track can warm you up on windy afternoons, which is a much needed boost for the colder spring days.
“Wonder” by Natalie Merchant
“Wonder” is Sunday morning captured in a single song — the lazy kind, not the scary kind — meant for days when you sleep in and wake up to birds chirping, stretch out your arms, and have some much needed peace during this stressful season.
“Clueless” by Ellie Williams
Over an easy-going and warm instrumental, Williams describes the all-too-relatable feeling of questioning if your crush knows how you feel. A track for daydreaming and humming along as you stroll through the yard, glowing with energy and excitement for the warmer days ahead, “Clueless” is the perfect bubbly, dreamy song for the sunnier moments of spring.
