Much laughter and excitement descended upon the Huntington Theatre on the evening of April 10 as a host of Broadway lovers from all walks of life took to the stage for a night of drinks, banter, and trivia.
The event, hosted by Trident Booksellers in collaboration with the Huntington, presented attendees with seven fun rounds of Broadway-themed quiz questions, as teams of up to six members battled it out for Broadway glory. The event was hosted on the actual stage of the Huntington Theatre, lit up by spotlights overhead, which set the atmosphere for excitement. This is one of a series of non-traditional events hosted at the Huntington Theatre’s stage.
In an interview with the Crimson, Trident Booksellers’ event coordinator Jordan Sahley, a presenter on the trivia night, revealed that it was hard to anticipate how such a unique event would pan out.
“We weren’t sure what we were gonna get here, but everyone was super sweet, and it was such a fun night,” she said.
Once team names were decided upon, the night got underway, with Round One consisting of questions all about “Broadway Firsts” — quizzing contestants on the first lyric in “Hamilton,” or the first Broadway show that Stephen Sondheim worked on as a lyricist, for example. Round Two followed, during which each question required the participants to guess the Broadway show based on one famous musical note from each production. The third round focused on the Tony Awards, but mostly on people actually named Tony.
Round Four upped the heat, requiring attendees to dive deep into their knowledge of Broadway to finish the lyrics of a variety of different theatre songs. Following that was a round all about Broadway shows that have also been movies, and then another round called “Location, Location, Location,” in which participants had to decide which show within a selection did not take place in the same setting as the others. Round Seven concluded the night swiftly with a quirky “Musical Chairs” theme, in which teams had to name seven Broadway shows featuring a chair from photographs projected onto a screen.
When winners were announced, last place received a round of applause, while first place was booed passionately, in good spirits.
“[It] feels great,” said Andrew Morey, one of the event’s winners. “We won by mistake because we totally did not think we were going to win.”
This sentiment seemed to be shared by many other participants at the event, as they got to battle it out with fellow Broadway fanatics in a warm and upbeat setting. Reflecting on the event, attendee Olivia Bogiages was all smiles on her way out.
“It was a really good time, and it had really informative, interesting questions,” she said.
The champions of the night left with two tickets per person to see an upcoming musical production at the Huntington, “The Light in the Piazza,” as well as a record of the “Wicked” movie soundtrack and a few more goodies.
Though Sahley was “nervous” going in, she found the event was a great success and if replicated, shows promise to bring fans of different genres together in the future.
“We would love to do more offsites and trivias in unexpected places,” Sahley said.
