Woman Rescued from Freezing Charles River, Transported to Hospital with Serious Injuries

A woman was rescued from freezing water in the Charles River near the Massachusetts Avenue bridge near MIT on Tuesday morning.

Massachusetts State Police responded around 7:45 a.m. Tuesday to reports of a person in the Charles River, according to a statement from MSP Trooper James D. DeAngelis.

The Cambridge Fire Department shared in a post on X that emergency responders rescued the woman from the water using an engine ladder shortly after 8 a.m.

Minutes later, CFD began clearing the scene, according to a subsequent X post. CFD also wrote that the woman was left in the care of responders from Cambridge Pro Emergency Medical Services.

The woman was then transported to a local hospital for serious injuries due to her exposure to freezing water, according to DeAngelis.

This is at least the third incident to occur in the Charles River since the start of this year. The Boston Fire Department recovered a body from the river near the Massachusetts Avenue bridge near MIT in a fatal incident last week.

MSP also conducted a missing persons search in the same area of the Charles River after responding to a Jan. 25 report of abandoned items on the riverbank. As of a Jan. 27 email from Massachusetts State Police, the search concluded with no results, but the investigation was ongoing.
