Boston Fire Department Recovers Body From Charles River Near MIT

The Boston Fire Department recovered a body from the Charles River on Sunday after responding to a report that an individual jumped off the Massachusetts Avenue bridge near MIT.

According to Massachusetts State Police spokesperson Tim McGuirk, authorities were alerted to the incident by a report early Sunday morning.

“Shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday, a person called the State Police Boston Barracks to report that they observed a person who appeared to jump off the Massachusetts Avenue Bridge,” McGuirk wrote.

The report drew a response from the Massachusetts State Police, as well as fire and police departments from Boston and Cambridge. Divers from the Boston Fire Department recovered a body shortly after the search began.

“At approximately 4 a.m., divers from the Boston Fire Department located the deceased victim,” McGurk wrote.

As of Sunday afternoon, the incident remains under investigation by the MSP.

The death is the second incident in the area over the last two weeks. The MSP began a missing persons search in the Charles River, also by MIT, after responding to a report on Jan. 25 of abandoned items on the riverbank. As of a Jan. 27 email from Massachusetts State Police, the search concluded with no results, but the investigation is ongoing.
