More than 1,700 households are without power in the Cambridgeport neighborhood, according to an Eversource outage map, after a transformer exploded around 3:26 p.m. Tuesday.
According to the outage map, power is expected to be restored to residents by 5:15 p.m.
Firefighters from the Cambridge Fire Department responded to a transformer fire at Pearl and Putnam shortly before 3:30 p.m., Cambridge spokesperson Jeremy Warnick wrote in an email.
The fire destroyed the transformer, the pole, and all wiring — including phone, electrical, and cable lines — attached to it, Warnick added.
“There are blocks in the area that will be without power for an extended period of time,” he wrote.
