The Cambridge Police and Fire Departments responded to a “serious crash involving multiple vehicles,” including one flipped vehicle, on Memorial Drive near Vassar Street around 4:15 p.m., CPD announced in an email Thursday evening.
As of 6 p.m., the vehicles had been cleared and both sides of Memorial Drive had reopened.
CPD spokesperson Robert Goulston said the crash was being investigated by Massachusetts State Police.
State Trooper James D. DeAngelis wrote in a statement that “one person was trapped for a short time in the overturned vehicle.”
DeAngelis wrote that four vehicles were involved in the crash, “one of which rolled over.” He did not comment on the medical status of any of the individuals involved in the crash.
The crash occurred near an intersection near the Boston University Bridge that local advocates have long said is unsafe for bikers and pedestrians. A cyclist was killed by an oncoming SUV in the area in September, and state officials are in the process of improving the intersection with additional safety measures.
The initial announcement from CPD did not mention whether any pedestrians or cyclists were involved in the crash.
