Stephen Gallagher, chief information officer at Harvard Business School, will become the CIO at Stanford University starting March 12, according to a Stanford press release Friday.
Gallagher’s selection comes after a five-month-long search led by a search committee comprising faculty, staff and members of both the university and the hospital boards, and chaired by Vice President for Business Affairs Randy Livingston. In his new position, Gallagher will report to Livingston.
Livingston said he is excited Gallagher will join Stanford's information technology team.
“Steve brings an outstanding combination of strategic technology vision, technical depth and experience in both higher education and industry,” Livingston said in the press release.
“He is also a terrific leader and developer of talent, which are critical skills given the scope of University IT,” Livingston added.
At Harvard, Gallagher manages the Business School’s IT strategy, leading a team of 275 IT staffers. He co-chairs the Enterprise Architecture Committee and is also a member of the CIO council, where he works to make technology readily available and accessible across the University.
In the press release, Gallagher said he is honored to be joining Stanford’s IT team.
“I am incredibly excited and honored to have the opportunity to lead University IT in support of Stanford’s unparalleled research, teaching, learning and health care mission,” Gallagher said.
“This is a transformative time within higher education, and I am committed to ensuring every person within UIT feels connected to our collective purpose to advance the best technology and support services across higher education and beyond,” he added.
Gallagher has worked at the Business School since 2013. Prior to that, he was employed by the University of San Francisco from 2004 to 2013.
