Letter to the Editor: Jews, Blacks, and Race at Harvard

By Mike Offner

To the editor:

As a Jewish alumnus of Harvard Law School, I am compelled to speak up about the current debate regarding the symbolic connection to slavery of the Harvard Law School seal and the Mather House name.

If Harvard had places called "Hitler Hall" and "Mengele Meadows," how would I and other Jewish members of the Harvard community react?

Can someone explain to me why the present situation is different? President Faust? Dean Minow? Anyone?

Mike Offner is a 1997 graduate of Harvard Law School.
