Former Harvard co-captain Jeremy Lin will sign with the Golden State Warriors in Oakland, Calif. at 11 a.m. PST following a physical examination on Wednesday, Lin’s agent Roger Montgomery confirmed with The Crimson this morning.
Lin's choice of team marks the culmination of much media speculation—including Tuesday night's leak that Lin would sign with the Warriors—about where the Asian American basketball star would ultimately go after a strong showing before NBA professionals in the summer league.
Lin will sign a two-year contract with the first year guaranteed for at least half of its $500,000 value—but the terms of the deal remain undisclosed, according to Montgomery.
Montgomery said that he has been in negotiations with the Warriors for two or three days, and that the Warriors first approached Montgomery after Lin scored 13 points and pulled down four rebounds in an impressive summer league performance against John Wall and the Washington Wizards.
Lin was seriously considering both the Los Angeles Lakers and the Dallas Mavericks—the team that Lin played for in the 2010 NBA Summer League, according to Montgomery. But Lin chose the Warriors due to the investment they were willing to make and the team’s location in northern California.
“All the components fell in place,” Montgomery said. “The major factors were the guaranteed investment—I truly believe that they don’t look at him as a project… The other factor that this is so awesome is for Jeremy to come home to play. It’s really going to be full circle.”
Lin—an Asian American who grew up a Warriors’ fan in Palo Alto, Calif.—played high school basketball at Palo Alto High School, which is located just 28 mile from the Warriors’ Oracle Arena in Oakland.
Montgomery stated that the Warriors’ proximity to Lin’s hometown has helped land the 21-year-old a number of endorsement opportunities—including a potential shoe deal.
“We’ve had tremendous inquiries,” Montgomery said. “Not ready to confirm anything yet…We feel there will be tremendous opportunities.”
