Love in Leverett Leads to Early Engagement

They may be considered “engaged and underage,” but for this love-struck Leverett couple, engagement could not have come quickly enough.

Kevin A. O’Herin ’09 proposed to fellow senior Alice Chi ’09 on Saturday Nov. 8 with a series of romantic displays that make Prince Charming look like…well, most college boys.

O’Herin began in fairy tale fashion with hand delivered poems and roses, followed by a romantic stroll along the Charles, where he popped the question to an unsuspecting Chi. Afterwards, he cleared out his dorm-room for a romantic dinner. HUDS did not make an appearance.

Chi realizes that her engagement is a bit untraditional at an age when commitment means going to brain-break together. “Growing up, I expected to get married around 26 or 27 as an ideal age, and to have a lot more of my education, career, and financial security established by then,” says the bride-to-be.

In spite of this, O’Herin’s parents, Brian and Julie, who also wed in their early twenties, support their son’s decision. “We are proud of our son and his choice makes us proud,” Mrs. O’Herin beamed.

Early engagement aside, the couple’s romance took a while to start. The two met freshman year through the Harvard-Radcliffe Christian Fellowship, but did not begin dating until early junior year.

Now, a year later, wedding bells are within earshot. Though a date has yet to be established, the couple anticipates tying the knot soon after graduation.

O’Herin admitted that balancing school and his new marital status is no breeze, “It’s kind of hard to get my mind back on school.” After all, the blissful couple is not immune to the usual senior stresses: midterms, extra-curriculars, and job searching. But if there’s one thing they don’t have to stress about, it’s the post-grad dating scene.
