For the Crimson’s youth, it was a quick beginning to the 2007 campaign.
With the men’s and women’s cross country teams welcoming a total of 27 freshmen, Harvard wasted no time in getting experience for the newcomers on Friday at Boston University, with the women downing Manhattan and Marist and the men defeating Manhattan and tying the Terriers.
On the women’s side, the Crimson was paced by a pair of freshmen who placed ninth and 10th in the overall field. Thea Lee finished in 19:45 and Eliza Ives crossed the line in 19:46.
In fact, all of Harvard’s top seven finishers were freshmen on the women’s side, including a 12th-place finish by Renata Cummins and a 17th-place run by Meghan Houser.
BU and Brown downed the women’s team, which finished 2-2 on the day.
For the men, sophomore Robert Kenney finished 10th, leading the Crimson in 27:18 on an eight-kilometer course. The next five finishers were all freshmen, including Matthew Dewey—who finished 11th in 27:19—19th-place Daniel Emont, and 20th-place Mark Hirschboek.
Brown and Marist each finished ahead of the men, leaving them 1-2-1 on the day.
