SPORTS BRIEF: Men’s Swimming Defeats Yale, Falls to Tigers

The Harvard men’s swimming and diving team completed its dual meet season at the Harvard-Yale-Princeton meet in Princeton, N.J. this weekend. The Crimson topped the Bulldogs, 184-169, but fell to the Tigers, 190-163, to finish at 7-2 overall and 5-2 in the EISL.

The H-Y-P meet did not have a direct bearing on the EISL title this year—Cornell had already snagged first place with a perfect 8-0 league record—but it did provide the Crimson with the opportunity to capture second place and defeat Princeton in its own pool. Harvard has not won at Princeton’s DeNunzio Pool since 1983, and could not break the streak this year.

The Crimson started the meet with a victory the 200-yard freestyle relay, and David Guernsey continued in the next event with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle. The sophomore later added a fourth-place finish in the 50 yard freestyle.

Captain Jason Degnan-Rojeski totaled two third-place finishes in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke. Junior Geoff Rathgeber contributed individual wins in the 200-yard IM and the 400 IM, while junior Pat Quinn grabbed second in the 50-yard freestyle and third in the 100. Although the Crimson notched victories in the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay, it was not enough to overtake the Tigers.

Harvard will have next weekend off to prepare for the ECAC Championships, which will occur Feb. 16-18 at the Crimson’s Blodgett Pool.
