LIVE: Harvard M. Hoops vs. Michigan

Big Ten's Michigan Wolverines come to Lavietes as Amaker faces off against his old squad

By Crimson Sports Staff, Crimson Staff Writer

Michigan's in town to take on the Crimson in a non-conference battle. Follow it live with the Crimson.

FINAL SCORE: HARVARD 62, MICHIGAN 51

:00 - Two late scores by Magnarelli and Lin finish it off, and Harvard majorly upsets Michigan. The Harvard crowd is chanting "Ivy League," Lin gave a big hug to Amaker, and the Crimson Crazies are rushing the court. Who would have thought?!

:31 - Harris makes 1 of 2, but Harvard secures the offensive board in a reversal of roles. Housman is fouled and will go to the line. He hits both! HARVARD 58, MICHIGAN 51

:37 - Housman gets a lay-up to fall on a sweet drive. Sims can't drop a three on the other end, and Harris is fouled on a Harvard 3-on-1 break. He'll head to the line after the time-out. HARVARD 55, MICHIGAN 51

1:25 - Housman drives down low but can't convert. Michigan misses on the other end. Defense is going to win this ballgame as neither team can put it home.

2:20 - Lin misses a Harvard three-point attempt, and Grady misses one the the Wolverines. Both teams are settling for jumpers when they should be pounding it down low and working inside-out.

3:18 - Sims scores on the Michigan end, but Magnarelli scores on the Harvard end. HARVARD 53, MICHIGAN 51

3:57
- A Manny Harris jumper makes it a 2-point game. Jump ball after a scramble down low going into a timeout, makes it Michigan in possession. HARVARD 51, MICHIGAN 49

5:02 - A Gibson put-back for Michigan puts the Wolverines within 2, but Evan Harris nails two free throws on the other end to put Harvard back up by 4. HARVARD 51, MICHIGAN 47

5:56 - Two big defensive stops for Harvard. First, Evan Harris blocks Coleman in the paint, then on the next possession, Magnarelli thwarts Manny Harris. McGeary's long three goes in-and-out, but Magnarelli cleans up the glass and puts it back. HARVARD 49, MICHIGAN 45

6:53 - Great heads up play by Housman. After another airballed attempt by Michigan, in the run-down for the rebound, Housman throws it off a Michigan defender and out of bounds. Harvard possession up by 2 into the timeout.

7:06 - The Crimson continues to get production from unlikely sources. Another McGeary three for his 11th point ties the game again. Then a Ron Coleman airball on the other end gives Harvard the ball back. Lin nails a jumper to wrestle the lead back. HARVARD 47, MICHIGAN 45

8:44
- We're picking up the pace at Lavietes. After a Harris lay-in tied it, Coleman adds to his total with a three pointer to put Michigan up by 3. HARVARD 42, MICHIGAN 45

10:00  - Michigan freshman Kelvin Grady hits a three to give the Wolverines their first lead. HARVARD 40, MICHIGAN 42

10:44 - A McGeary three stops the run, but Sims answers with an offensive board and putback. HARVARD 40, MICHIGAN 39

11:58 - Make that an 11-0 run. A monster dunk attempt by Sims thwarted by a Magnarelli foul, Sims makes the first of two free throws, but the Wolverines grab the offensive board and Coleman nails a three. Tie ballgame! Then, Magnarelli blocked on a dunk attempt on the other end. HARVARD 37, MICHIGAN 37

12:39 - Two free throws by Michigan's Sims, and a shot clock violation by Harvard after stifling Michigan defense, and the Wolverines have scored 7 straight. HARVARD 37, MICHIGAN 33

14:50 - Finally, Michigan's Manny Harris gets involved on an agressive drive and score while fouled by Harvard's Evan Harris. He converts the three-point play. HARVARD 37, MICHIGAN 29

15:39 - Pusar's stepping out of his normal role and becoming the playmaker. After a drive and missed layup, he grabbed his offensive board, kicked it to Evan Harris, out to Jeremy Lin, to Housman at the top of the key who drained a three. "We got Tommy," referring to Amaker, chants ensue. HARVARD 35, MICHIGAN 24

16:55 - Lin finds Pusar in the corner for three, who narrowly misses. Magnarelli with the offensive board, fouled on the put-back. He makes 1 of 2. HARVARD 32, MICHIGAN 22

17:31 - After poor ball control by both squads for several possessions, we see a familiar play by Harvard. Lin finds Pusar down low for his 4th assist and Pusar's 12th point. HARVARD 31, MICHIGAN 22

19:25 - Housman to the line nails 1 of 2 after fouled hard driving to the hoop by Manny Harris. HARVARD 29, MICHIGAN 22

SECOND HALF

HALFTIME STATS - Pusar leads Harvard with 10 points, and Lin notched 3 assists. Coleman leads the Wolverines with 6, while the Crimson has held Manny Harris to just 4 points and 4 rebounds. 10 Offensive boards for the Wolverines, but just 9/30 shooting from the field. Harvard shot 12/27.

:00 - A buzzer-beater three-pointer from the Wolverines' Jerret Smith puts the Wolverines within six at the half. Stellar Harvard defense down low combined with Michigan's easy misses has kept the Crimson on top. Have to wonder if the Wolverines will stay in their zone or go man-to-man after all those easy Harvard lay-ups. All in all, a low-scoring half, but Harvard on top. HARVARD 28, MICHIGAN 22

:38 - Another lay-in from Pusar, which gives him 10 points, found by Jeremy Lin as the Crimson continues to burn the 1-3-1 zone backdoor. This follows a DeShawn Sims three-pointer for Michigan. HARVARD 28, MICHIGAN 19

1:21 - A Housman pick at the top of the key leads to Pusar getting fouled on the other end going for a layup. He'll have 2 FT's. He puts them away. HARVARD 26, MICHIGAN 16

2:43 - Ref's timeout as Michigan's DeShawn Sims appears to have hit his head on the rim going for an unsuccessful alley-oop attempt. He seems to be OK, as he's now back on the floor.

3:28 - More stellar down-low defense by Harvard, but a lack of rebounding. Three put-back attempts by Michigan can't be converted before an offensive foul on the Harvard end gives it right back to the Wolverines into another timeout. HARVARD 22, MICHIGAN 16

4:01 - After a long and unsuccessful possession by Michigan which includes about 4 offensive rebounds and at least 2 times where the Crimson gave the ball right back to Michigan, Harvard's Evan Harris finds Andy Pusar for the easy lay-in down low.

5:46 - All Harvard starters back on the floor out of the time out. If the stands weren't full before, they are now. We've got "Let's Go Harvard" and "Let's Go Blue" chants competing against each other.

6:24 -Pusar, McGeary, Magnarelli, Unger, and Carey on the court for Harvard, and and the shot block runs down yet again. M. Harris makes an easy lay up on the other end, before Unger puts in an easy score to end Michigan's 8-0 run. HARVARD 20, MICHIGAN 16

7:07 - Three quick scores for Michigan against most of the Harvard bench. A jumper and a lay-in from the Wolverines' Ron Coleman, and a put back by Anthony Wright makes it HARVARD 18, MICHIGAN 14

8:39 - Again, Michigan makes Harvard runs down the shot clock to about 4, before stealing the ball from the Crimson. Fortunately, freshman point guard T.J. Carey ripped it right back on the other end.

9:49 - As Michigan's Harris misses a jumper and stumbles to the ground, on the other end, captain Brad Unger, who just checked in, faked a 20-foot jumper before finding big man Pat Magnarelli down low for the easy score. Forces Michigan into a TO. HARVARD 18, MICHIGAN 8

10:25 - McGeary nails the three this time. HARVARD 16, MICHIGAN 8

10:58 - Michigan's zone is keeping Harvard outside and giving them trouble penetrating. The shot clock keeps winding all the way down. McGeary was open in the corner, faked a three and nailed a short jumper.

11:51 - Another timeout follows Michigan putting up another miss from the outside. They can't buy anything outside of the key. Michigan's Manny Harris, Amaker recruit and the Wolverines' leading scorer, hasn't had a chance to show anything yet. I don't think he'd hoisted a shot until he was just fouled down low. 2 free throws after the break.

12:24 - Michigan, it seems, can only score from the inside. Another inside bucket from Sims, followed by a Harris lay-in for Harvard makes it HARVARD 11, MICHIGAN 6

13:35 - After a travel call on the Wolverines, Crimson sophomore Dan McGeary checks in for Pusar, and misses his first three-point attempt of the night.

15:00 - Housman throws the ball away, but wrestles it back, Lin hits a three to the crowd's delight. HARVARD 9, MICHIGAN 4

15:27 - First media timeout, and after another Andy Pusar aggressive lay-up, the Crimson leads by 2. HARVARD 6, MICHIGAN 4

16:30 - Now the teams are scoring. Up-and-down ball ties the game at 4, as Michigan gets two easy scores down low, and the Crimson's Andy Pusar puts home a lay-in.

17:51 - Harris with another offensive board on a Lin three attempt for the first score of the game. HARVARD 2, MICHIGAN 0

18:30 - Two Michigan airballs in one possession, neither team can buy a hoop early.

19:02 - An extended 1-3-1 zone by Michigan is keeping Harvard on the outside, two offensive rebounds--first by Harris, then by Pusar--keep Harvard in possession, but the Crimson can't score.

20:00 - Tip off. Gibson takes the tip for the Wolverines, and the Harvard crowd is loud and roaring as the Wolverines set up at the top.

GAME TIME

5:25 p.m. - 5 minutes from tip, teams are all warmed up. About to sing the National Anthem in a packed Lavietes Pavilion.

5:28 p.m. - Starters being introduced. We're just minutes from tip.
