Holy Cross game postponed; Harvard hurlers pick up hardware

By Jonathan Lehman, Crimson Staff Writer

The Harvard baseball team’s scheduled game at Holy Cross was postponed yesterday due to the inclement weather in the Boston area, and no make-up date has been announced.

Despite its inactivity, though, the Harvard baseball team still received some good news. The Ivy League office honored Crimson hurlers Shawn Haviland and Adam Cole with two of its weekly awards.

Haviland, the sophomore ace, was named Pitcher of the Week on the strength of his 11 1/3 innings without allowing an earned run. After two stellar relief outings over spring break in Florida, Haviland twirled a complete-game seven-hitter at Princeton on Saturday, striking out seven.

Cole was singled out as the Rookie of the Week for his efforts in the Princeton nightcap. In his Ivy League debut, Cole fanned 11 batters in 7 2/3 frames on the way to his first collegiate win. Counting a relief appearance, Cole held opposing hitters to a .182 batting average for the week.

Senior rightfielder Lance Salsgiver was tabbed for the League Honor Roll, batting .464 with 13 runs scored, seven stolen bases, and an impressive .821 slugging percentage.

First-place Harvard returns to the field for its home opener this Saturday meeting Penn in a noon-time doubleheader. It then clashes with Columbia in another doubleheader on Sunday, also at noon.
