SPORTS BRIEF: Sophomore Scherf places ninth in 3000-meter run at NCAA championships, Lane placs 12th in long jump

By The Crimson Staff

At the NCAA championships this past weekend in Fayetteville, Ark. senior Samyr Laine and sophomore Lindsey Scherf respresented the Harvard track and field teams by competing in the long jump and the women’s 5000- and 3000-meter runs, respectively.

Laine, who was named U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division I Northeast Region Field Athlete of the Year, jumped 15.48 meters in his third and final attempt to place 12th in a field of 17 competitors. Lane also fouled on his first attempt and landed a jump of 14.95 meters on his second.

Scherf, in only her second year of collegiate competition, placed ninth in the shorter of the two runs with a time of 9:26.36—only the top eight places earned team points, however.

In the 5000-meter race, she took 14th out of 17, crossing the finish line in 16:38.47.
