A weekend of misfortune made the 2005 fall debut of the Harvard men’s golf team—and of Jim Burke, the new head coach as of July 26—a weekend to forget.
The Crimson failed to meet the required team minimum of four players after captain D.J. Hynes reinjured his knee and sophomore Sam Lissner contracted a virus.
“To have that happen,” said junior Tom Hegge, whose team-best 235 placed him at 30th individually, “was really unfortunate.”
Only Hegge, senior James Cleary, and sophomore Andrew Livingston turned in final scorecards for the Harvard team. The Crimson was further depleted by the absence of first-year golfers Michael Shore and John Christensen. School rules require that freshman athletes stay on campus to participate in Freshman Week activities.
