SPORTS BRIEF: Senior goaltender Dov Grumet-Morris chosen as a finalist for the 25th Hobey Baker Memorial Award

Harvard goaltender Dov Grumet-Morris was announced as one of 10 finalists for the 25th Hobey Baker Memorial Award, which honors college hockey’s top player.

The senior currently leads the nation with his .949 save percentage, and his 1.53 goals-against average is good for second.

“It’s obviously a great honor,” Grumet-Morris said yesterday afternoon, when his team had finished practice in Albany, N.Y., where it was preparing for tonight’s ECAC semifinal against Colgate at the Pepsi Center. Grumet-Morris indicated that at that time, he had told neither his parents nor his teammates.

He did say, though, that with this weekend’s ECAC championships took priority over his Hobey thoughts.

“We’re up here in Albany, now,” he said, “and we’re just trying to get ready for Colgate.”

This year’s Hobey field boasts three other goaltenders—Northern Michigan’s Tuomas Tarkki, Bowling Green’s Jordan Sigalet, Cornell’s David McKee—though in award’s 24-year history, only two netminders have won.

Grumet-Morris is the program’s first finalist since 1994, when current-assistant coach Sean McCann made it to the final-10. The Crimson has had three winners—Lane MacDonald ’89, Mark Fusco ’83, and Scott Fusco ’85.

And though Grumet-Morris is loathe to admit his own excitement, he openly acknowledges that “it’s definitely good for our program. We have continuously, over the past four years, tried to raise the quality [of the program]...and this recognition, it helps our league and our team.”
