Scherf continues to re-write record books, setting fastest 3,000-meter mark since 1983

The Harvard track and field stars continued to shine on Saturday at the Harvard Invitational, with sophomore Lindsey Scherf qualifying for her second NCAA Indoor Championships event in as many weeks.

Scherf, who qualified for the 5,000-meter run with a school-record time against Boston College last week, won the 3,000-meter event Saturday with a time of 9:20.51. It was the fastest 3,000 meters by a Crimson runner since 1983.

This weekend’s invitational, which was unscored, saw several other Harvard representatives win individual events. Freshman Becky Christensen won the high jump with a mark of 1.71 meters and junior Mary Serdakowski won the 60-meter hurdles with a 9.12 time. In the women’s pole vault, sophomore Clara Blattler and freshman Sally Stanton took first and second for the Crimson.

Senior Travis led the men with a first-place finish in the triple jump (14.97 meters) and a second-place in the long jump (5.82 meters). Junior Sean Barrett won the men’s 5,000-meter run, finishing in 14:50.6. Sophomore teammate Andrew Lipkin was in third with a time of 15:13.32. The Crimson took five of the top seven places in the event.

Harvard will resume competition after winter break with a dual meet at home against Northeastern.
