Eight seniors will be living, studying, and partying in the White House this year. However, this White House is closer to the Charles than the Potomac.

Winthrop’s Victorian residence, dubbed the “White House” for obvious reasons, previously accommodated visiting faculty. Due to housing shortages caused by the renovation of the Hasty Pudding this year, Winthrop included the home in its housing lottery last spring. The house sits on the corner of Memorial Drive and Plympton Street; it has seven bedrooms, three bathrooms, a full kitchen, and a common room.

Even though the house’s basement is off limits, “we hope that we can investigate the funny smells that are coming from the door,” said Jennifer G. Raymond ’06.

Although these lucky students will not be throwing any inaugural balls during their senior year, they want to make the house as open to other Winthrop residents as possible. “We are so thankful to Winthrop for giving us the opportunity to live here,” said Kavita M. Shukla ’06, another White House resident. “We would like to invite over Winthrop students to teas throughout the year.”

“The White House certainly will not become the next Ground Zero, but if the [Undergraduate Council] can help us financially, we would like share our home,” said Danielle L. Buckley ’06. Three weeks into the school year, the residents of the White House have thrown one large-scale party and no teas. They have no plans for entertaining the masses in the near future, but never fear: Halloween is less than a month away.
