Class Marshal Finalists Chosen

The much-anticipated results of the first round of the Senior Class Marshal election were released yesterday afternoon, with 16 finalists selected from the original pool of 60.

Director of College Alumni Programs Hoopes Wampler, who runs the Class Marshal elections, congratulated the finalists in an e-mail sent yesterday. Wampler did not make a formal announcement about the finalists to the senior class yesterday.

The first round of voting occurred online between September 28 and September 30, and the second round begins today and will last until October 6. In this final phase, eight students will be elected Class Marshals and announced October 7, according to the Class of 2006 website.

The eight Marshals, along with House Representatives, Class Secretary, and Class Treasurer will form the Senior Class Committee. Elections for the House Representatives will begin later this month, and Class Secretary and Treasurer are selected by members of the Senior Class Committee through an application process. Applications for those positions are due on November 1.

The Senior Class Committee is responsible for planning events for the senior class throughout the year and during Senior Week, choosing the Class Day guest speaker, and serving as liaisons between the Class of 2006 and the Harvard Alumni Association for life.

All of the candidates contacted by The Crimson yesterday said they felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the Class of 2006 and their undergraduate experiences at Harvard. Christina L. Adams ’06 said, “I have genuinely appreciated the opportunity to spend time with the people at Harvard.” Adam said she hopes that, through the activities organized by the Class Marshals, seniors will have a good way to reconnect with people that they have not seen since freshman year.

Lindsey E. Gary ’06, who is also a finalist, said that any of the 16 remaining candidates would make a “great” Marshal. “I really think that the people that made it to the second round are the type that will follow through with the responsibilities of the job,” Gary added.

Gustavo A. Cardenas ’06, also a finalist, said that if he were elected, he would “like to get started with all the senior events early. In years past, I’ve heard people say, in March, ‘I went to senior bar and I didn’t know anybody there,” and I don’t want that to happen again.’”

Another finalist, John “Jack” P. McCambridge ’06, wrote in an e-mail yesterday that he believes that the Senior Class Committee should aim to include “anyone who wants to help shape their senior year, not just the Marshals” in its planning process.
