CRIMSON NINE OUT TO REPEAT 1916 WIN OVER GREEN

The Dartmouth baseball team which faces the University squad at 3 o'clock on Soldiers Field this afternoon in the last test before the start of the Yale series on Tuesday, will strike the defending nine at the top of its stride. Since the overwhelming Princeton victory of two weeks ago, followed by an extra-inning triumph over Brown and a decisive win over the Alumni team, the Crimson diamond squad has constantly improved in all departments.

Last Crimson Win in 1916

This afternoon Captain Todd's men will be trying to end exactly one decade of Green predominance on the baseball field, and Coach Mitchell, whose 1916 squad was the last to administer defeat to a Dartmouth team, will be striving to direct his nine to a repetition of the victory of ten years ago. The invaders, however will present a powerful line-up containing six veterans with a reputation for hard hitting. Last year the University went into the ninth inning of its game with Dartmouth, leading by one run. With two men out and runners on first and second bases. Captain Bjorkman of the Hanover team pounded out a three base hit and the Granite ball tossers were able to maintain their record of victories. The final count was 5 to 4.

Green Record Not Impressive

The record of the Hanover team for this season is not especially impressive although the Green attack has shown a lot of power behind good pitching, which has been lacking during the greater number of games. Dartmouth dropped games to both Yale and Princeton early in the season but has registered double wins over both Cornell and Pennsylvania. In the contest with the Elis, Dartmouth tried three pitchers including Lane, the big hockey and baseball star, but none of them were able to hold the hard hitting Blue, batsmen. Yale had trouble with its pitching also and the game turned into a free hitting contest with the Bulldogs taking the heavy end of the 17 to 10 score. The Tigers captured a 5 to 3 victory on the previous day when the game was called in the fifth inning because of rain.

Although Lane or Carver appear to be the alternate choices to pitch against the Crimson today, it is quite possible that either Van Riper or Gibson may open on the mound. Lane had a slow start this season but has picked up rapidly and he won his last game against Springfield. Carver and Van Piper have both worked in several of the same games, the latter usually in the relief role.

The University nine rested yesterday and gathered late in the afternoon to leave for South Lincoln, where the entire team was entertained at dinner last night at the home of Captain Todd. The line-up which will step on the field this afternoon to open the game will probably remain unchanged.
