M., W. Fencing Go 4-1 Over Break

The Harvard men’s fencing team won four of five contests over break, dropping its only decision to defending national runner-up Penn State.

The No. 3 Nittany Lions (4-2) dropped the No. 9 Crimson (4-2) 17-10 on their way to a 6-0 record at the Brandeis/MIT Invitational last Sunday. Harvard easily won its other two matches of the day, besting Brown, 18-9, and North Carolina, 21-6, as freshman foil Enoch Woodhouse went undefeated on the day.

The day before, the Crimson swept Boston College and NYU in a pair of match-ups in Chestnut Hill. The men capitalized on a strong showing in sabre (taking 8-of-9 bouts) to down Boston College 20-7. Harvard then beat No. 10 NYU (3-6) by the same score, sweeping all three weapons for the second time that day, including a 8-1 advantage in epee.

The No. 9 women’s fencing team also had a successful break, posting a 4-1 record with its only loss coming to Penn State.

After defeating Brown 20-7 and UNC 17-10 at the Brandeis/MIT Invitational on Sunday, Harvard (7-2) fell 19-8 to Penn State (5-1) despite a monster victory from freshman epee Jasmine McGlade, who upset reigning NCAA champion Katarzyna Trzopek.

The Crimson opened the weekend by sweeping Boston College and NYU on Saturday, both by scores of 18-9.

The women earned a 5-4 edge in sabre and epee, and cruised to a 8-1 advantage in foil to close out the 18-9 win.
