The Harvard men’s volleyball team took advantage of a balanced offensive attack to win a pair of EIVA matches this weekend. The Crimson (3-1, 2-1 EIVA) battled past Vassar 3-2 (31-33, 30-20, 25-30, 30-28, 15-12) on Saturday, then swept Queens 3-0 (30-19, 38-36, 30-26) Sunday in its first full weekend of action.
In the victory over Vassar (2-6, 1-4) at Kenyon Hall, five Harvard players posted double-digit kill totals, led by junior outside hitter Will Reppun and sophomore opposite Seamus McKiernan with 16 apiece.
After dropping the first game in heartbreaking fashion, Harvard stormed back to take the second game 30-20 with an impressive .400 hitting percentage.
Freshman setter Dave Fitz—performing admirably filling in for former captain Mike Bookman ’03—chipped in 57 assists for the Crimson. Sophomore outside hitter Abe Marouf added 14 assists on an impressive .522 kill percentage.
McKiernan and Fitz also paced the defense, with 15 and 11 digs, respectively.
On Sunday, Harvard’s offense also featured a number of options. Four Crimson hitters—co-captain Juan Cardet, McKiernan, sophomore John Freese and Reppun—posted at least eight kills in the three-game victory over Queens (3-7, 1-3) at Fitzgerald Gymnasium.
Junior Juan Ramos contributed eight digs, while Fitz added 40 assists (13.3 apg).
The Crimson will continue its EIVA schedule this weekend, when it hosts Southampton and Vassar.
