Lesley Student Victim Of Indecent Assault

By Brendan R. Linn, Crimson Staff Writer

The recent string of indecent assaults continued yesterday when an unidentified man attacked a Lesley University student, according to Harvard University Police Department (HUPD) spokesman Steven G. Catalano.

The assailant in yesterday’s attack, at least the fourth indecent assault near campus this school year, remained at large.

At 6:03 p.m., reports came over police radio of an incident on Everett Street, the northern boundary of Harvard Law School. The suspect, who was described as a blond, medium-built white male in his 30s, fled towards Mass. Ave.

In total, there have been 12 indecent assaults against Harvard students in the vicinity of the Square since last October.

The College responded to last year’s wave of attacks by organizing the Harvard University Campus Escort Program (HUCEP), which replaced a defunct student-run escort service.

Harvard and the City of Cambridge also installed blue-light emergency call boxes in Cambridge Common, the location of one of the assaults last year and just a block from yesterday’s attack. There is a call box on the corner of Everett Street and Mass. Ave., near where the attack occurred.

The latest indecent assault occurred on Oct. 5, when a man riding a bicycle attacked a Harvard undergraduate outside Pennypacker Hall on Harvard Street. The suspect in that case also remains at large.

Officials at the Cambridge Police Department, which responded to yesterday’s assault, were unavailable for comment.
