To the editors:
Kudos to David B. Rochelson on his article in The Crimson about Harvard athletics (News, “Lewis Defended University Athletics,” April 29).
As a former captain of the men’s lacrosse team and an active member in the Friends group, I am very concerned with the direction that Harvard athletics appear to be headed under the Summers administration.
Rochelson hits it right on the screws. I’d love to see what the total number of athletes admitted for the Class of 2007 vs. 2006, 2005, 2004 looks like.
Aside from the football numbers going from 35 to 30, I’m sure the number of “all athletes” is down as well. It appears as if there is a real effort to de-emphasize athletics going on here.
