Two women were elected to top leadership roles on the Harvard Salient, the University’s conservative bi-monthly publication.
Claire V. McCusker ’04 and Rosie Lawler ’04 are the new editor and publisher, respectively.
Although the Salient has historically had a small staff with few women in top positions, neither saw their achievement as a triumph for feminism.
“I don’t look at things through gender-colored glasses,” McCusker said. “Being a woman is a part of who I am but I don’t see this as a historic moment for women because I don’t feel women have been oppressed on Harvard publications.”
Both McCusker and Lawler said they believe the conservative movement is aimed at advancing the status of both women and men, without favoring one over the other.
“I’m excited about this not because I’m a woman but because of the changes I can implement on the Salient,” McCusker said.
In store for the new year are plans to increase the conservative presence at Harvard, McCusker said, most likely by sponsoring debates.
Other newly elected board members are: Maximilian A. Pakaluk ’05, managing editor; Paul C. Schultz ’03, business manager; Andrew P. Winerman ’04, deputy editor; James E. Kruzer ’04, deputy publisher; Travis R. Kavulla ’06, Francis S. Marcel-Keyes ’05, Kevin R. Pilkiewicz ’05 and Michael S. Press ’04, associate editors; Jean M. Flannery ’04 and Paul E. Kwak ’03 senior writers; Joseph F. Keefe ’04 and Rebecca M. Milzoff ’04, staff artists; Boleslaw Z. Kabala ’03 and Gladden J. Pappin ’04, editors emiriti; and Francis X. Altiere IV ’04, publisher emeritus and social chair. Schultz and Winerman are also Crimson editors.
