Westfall, Hodel Named All-New England

Senior midfielder Katie Westfall and co-captain center back Katie Hodel of the Harvard women’s soccer team have been named to the New England Women’s Intercollegiate Soccer Association (NEWISA) All-New England team.

Westfall was named to the first team. Hodel made the second squad.

Westfall led the Ivy League in assists in her final two seasons with nine as a junior—which tied her with teammate striker Joey Yenne ’03—and 10 this year. Westfall finished her career tied for second on the Crimson’s all-time list with 32. She also added two goals this season.

Meanwhile, Hodel was a two-time captain of the Crimson who moved back from her defensive midfield role this season to shore up a defense that ultimately conceded the fewest goals in the Ivy League along with Brown. Harvard also posted five shutouts on the season.

Hodel finished the year with two assists.

The two were also the Crimson’s sole representatives on the All-Ivy first team. With her unanimous selection, Westfall became just the 15th player ever—and sixth Harvard player—to be a four-time first-team All-Ivy honoree.

The honor is just another in a long line of awards for Westfall.

Last year, she was named a third-team Northeast Region All-American.

After her sophomore season, Westfall was named a third-team All American, in addition to being a first-team All-Northeast selection.

As a freshman, Westfall was the Ivy Rookie of the Week twice and was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week. At the end of the season, she became the second consecutive Crimson player—after goalkeeper Cheryl Gunther ’03—and sixth overall to be named the Ivy Rookie of the Year

Westfall and Hodel combined to lead the Crimson to a 6-5-5 record this year.

Harvard went 2-2-3 in Ivy League play and finished tied with Penn for fourth place in the conference.
