Style Deconstructed

Man-about-town and English concentrator Rickford is one of the few straight males on campus who counts as a metrosexual. Chief among the qualifying characteristics is this Californian’s ability to put together a decent outfit. “I think style is all about innovation, and assertion,” he says.  “And other words that end in -ion.” He gave FM a glimpse of his closet caliber this week, and also makes a cover cameo.

SHIRT: I bought this shirt because I’m a huge fan of Dick Trickle. Dick Trickle is America’s Losingest Car Driver. Also, his name is Dick Trickle. That’s hot.

PANTS: These are my D&G cords. I mostly bought them because they say D&G on the back, so when I wear them, people know I paid way too much for a pair of pants. I don’t even like them that much.

SHOES: The shoes are Kenneth Cole. He’s a rich, old white guy, and I support that.

FM didn’t need to look too far to find this style maven-—truth be told, we found her in Associate Editor Irin Carmon ’05’s blocking group. But it was hard to find someone who could equal this Literature concentrator’s style individuality and passion for unusual fashion pieces.

EARRINGS AND BRACELET: From yard sales in the Catskills. My mom bargained down to $1 for the earrings. The bracelet was a little more expensive...about $3.

SHIRT: I found this shirt when I was about nine, in my aunt’s old room at my grandmother’s house. I wore it constantly (hence the holes), but it was only later that I realized it was a Keith Haring design for the comic art show in 1981.

SKIRT: Short denim skirts are a staple for me. Since I wear them so much, it takes time to find the perfect one...it’s like finding a pair of jeans. This is the newest incarnation for this year: Earl Jeans.

LEG-WARMERS: I found these in a small store in NoLita in N.Y. They seem to be pretty popular this season. I like them because I can wear short skirts into the fall and stay warm.

SHOES: Also from a boutique in NoLita (this is the neighborhood where I find a lot of my favorite things). I bought them as a present for myself when I graduated from high school. They’re still my favorite shoes.
