Luck Be A Lady
With his easy smile and affable manner, Kevin Meyers comes off as a pretty nice guy. He is also an all-around theater impresario, participating in everything from playwriting and performing in the Hasty Pudding Theatricals to producing “Tommy” in the Ex and working on the Broadway musical “Seussical.”
Growing up in Ridgewood, NJ, Kevin had many opportunities to watch theatrical events in nearby New York City. After seeing “Phantom of the Opera,” Kevin fell in love with theater and taught himself how to play piano so that he could play the score. He debuted as an actor in a seventh grade play and continued to perform through high school.
As a first-year, he immediately immersed himself into Harvard theater life by snagging a lead part in an HRDC production of City of Angels. Kevin began his career with the Hasty Pudding Theatricals (HPT) as a sophomore, successfully auditioning again as a junior. This year, he was one of the co-writers of the Pudding’s 154th show, “Snow Place Like Home.”
The summer after his sophomore year, Kevin worked for “Seussical” as an assistant for the lyricist and the stage management. He says with wry humor that “people will always remember ‘Seussical’ because it was disastrous,” but he still loves the musical and fondly listens to the CD.
Kevin has also been the football play-by-play guy for WHRB for the past three years. But he says, “although I thought about becoming the next Bob Costas, I’d rather be the next Stephen Sondheim.” And he steadily works towards to achieve that dream. Along with having written the HPT play, the History and Literature concentrator is currently taking a playwriting tutorial with Adrienne Kennedy.
If you are or know any “smart, pretty, nice, and funny” girls who are “interested in the theatre and arts” and are also “able to carry on some intellectual conversation,” keep in mind that Kevin claims to be one of the “15 most eligible bachelors at Harvard.” He hasn’t had any luck with love so far, although he has received plenty of theater fan mail. Kevin fondly remembers the first letter he got, in which a Massachusetts girl wrote: “I think you’re wicked cute.” Signed with the word “fiErcE” below her name, Kevin says the letter has “sort of haunted me ever since.”
Kevin says that “every moment of every day I’m passionate about what I’m doing,” even if it’s writing his senior thesis. When this extremely talented but also extremely busy senior needs to unwind, his idea of a great party is one with some attractive girls, his roommates, and all of his friends from the Hasty Pudding and Tommy. Kevin adds, the party will “probably be one with a lot of fun Bermuda drinks like Rum Swizzles and Dark and Stormies that the Pudding drinks when we’re in Bermuda.”
