'Once More Unto the Breach'

Tomorrow the undefeated Harvard football team hosts the University of Pennsylvania in what is set to be this year’s Ivy League title game. Both sides have yet to lose a game this season, but on Saturday afternoon the Quakers will surely go home disappointed—as they will have to return to Philadelphia regardless of the result.

Fresh from their mauling of the Columbia Lions, the Crimson seem hungry and ready to take on Penn. Harvard’s 7-0 record marks its best start to the season since 1968, and a win tomorrow would match Harvard’s longest win streak since the formation of the Ivy League. Led by quarterback Neil Rose and the phenomenal wide receiver Carl Morris, already within touching distance of myriad school receiving records, Harvard’s offense should have Penn players and fans Quaking with fear.

Sometimes it is tempting for Harvard students to dismiss school spirit as infantile or irrelevant. But students and faculty should be proud of their football team. Varsity athletes don’t compete every week for their own aggrandizement, but to add to the prestige of the University. Every victory that our sports teams achieve shows that Harvard students can excel outside of the classroom as well as within it.

We urge everyone to put aside their individual concerns for an afternoon and head down to Harvard Stadium this Saturday. In what looks set to be a close and exciting game, the Harvard football team deserves our support. It would be fantastic if ten thousand men and women of Harvard could turn up tomorrow to lustily cheer on their school. Our football team merits nothing less.
