After taking the first set by a wide margin, the Harvard women's volleyball team dropped the next three to fall to the University of Connecticut last night in Storrs, 3-1.
Despite a successful performance at the Harvard Classic last weekend, including two shutout wins over Hartford and Holy Cross, the Crimson (5-5) could not maintain their winning form against the Huskies (9-5) last night (8-15, 15-12, 15-8, 15-2).
Harvard began the match in competitive fashion, taking the first frame by a wide margin. But after battling in a close second set, the Huskies took control of the match with convincing third and fourth set dominance.
Sophomore Janice Dykema led the Huskies offense with 16 of Connecticut's 65 kills.
Freshman Laura Wooley also added to Connecticut's strong offense with 14 kills on her way to her third double-double of the year. She led the team with 16 digs.
Crimson sophomore-setter Mindy Jellin spearheaded Harvard's charge with 34 assists and nine digs, riding the wave of her recent success at the Harvard Classic.
Named an All-Tournament Player at the tournament, Jellin has led the Crimson attack as of late. Against Boston College last week she recorded a team-leading 51 assists in a 3-2 win.
Her prowess around the net was not enough to beat Connecticut, however, and it was tough going for the Crimson offense in general. The Huskies defense tallied a season-high 76 digs, holding Harvard to just two points in the fourth and final set of the match.
The Crimson have a chance to get back on their game as they open up the Harvard Invitational at home against Northeastern this Friday at 7 p.m.
