The Boston Police Department confirmed yesterday that first-year Harvard Medical School (HMS) student Luz Angelica Chavez died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Chavez's body was found accidentally by a librarian Thursday morning in a bathroom at the medical school's Countway Library.

Although autopsy results are still pending, the investigation has been closed, a police department official said.

In the wake of the suicide, HMS said it will review its policies on depression and student counseling.

"This will be thoroughly examined with an eye towards any possible improvements," said HMS spokesperson John Lacey.

A date has not yet been set for Chavez's funeral, which will take place in her home state of California.
