BSA Announces Election Results

Alicia E. Johnson '01 will succeed Dionne A. Fraser '99 as president of the Black Students Association (BSA), election officials announced Friday to members via e-mail.

Elections began last Monday evening, when members gathered in the Lowell House Junior Common Room to vote.

Elections continued through Wednesday, with members casting their votes via e-mail.

Tawney B. Pearson '01 won an uncontested race for vice-president. Shawanna L. Johnson '01 was elected secretary. McComma Grayson '00 will be the board's treasurer.

Election committee member and current BSA Vice President Jason B. Phillips '99 said 50 BSA members voted this year, on par with the level of voting participation the organization has seen in the post-randomization years.

Phillips, who is also a Crimson editor, adds that this level is significantly lower than that seen before randomization.

According to Phillips, the election committee always sees some undisputed positions because of the demanding nature of the leadership positions.

"Our board is larger than most student groups that I know of," he explained. "The positions are stressful and demand a lot of work."

The BSA elected its entire slate of executive board members in last week's election: Whitney R. Robinson '01, alumni representative; Aaliyah N. Williams '02, lecture series chair; Bianca R. Gwinn '01, public service chair; Julia M. Rosenbloom '01, publications chair; Aaron S. Montgomery '00, senior representative; Jennifer L. James '02, arts and entertainment chair; Skylar H. Byrd '00, on-line and technology chair. Byrd is also a Crimson executive.
