Harvard Fencers Battle at NCAAs

By Daniel G. Habib

Two fencers--sophomores Elizabeth Aranow and Emily Katz--were Harvard's lone representatives at the 1999 NCAA Championships last weekend at Brandeis in Waltham.

Both Katz, who qualified in the foil event, and Aranow, who competed in the epee event, were by vritue of qualifying for the tournament among the top 24 fencers in the nation.

Penn State won the overall team championship, but two Stanford fencers took home individual golds in the women's foil and epee.

The Cardinal's Monique DeBruin won the foil by defeating Columbia's Erin Smart 15-7, while teammate Felicia Zimmerman beat the Nittany Lions' Stephanie Eim 8-7 for the epee crown.
