Four members of the Harvard men's swimming and diving team left for the Hoosier State yesterday to compete in the NCAA Championships.

Swimmers Tim Martin, Greg Wriede and Denis Sirringhaus and diver Greg Walker will begin competition Thursday in the meet, which is held at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind.

Martin, a junior, and Sirringhaus, a senior, will compete in both the 500 freestyle and the 1650 freestyle. Martin is the No. 11 seed in the 1650 freestyle and Sirringhaus is the No. 17 seed.

Martin was .2 seconds off the Harvard mile record of 14:59.99-set by Bobby Hacket in 1978-at last year's NCAA Championships.

Wriede, a senior co-captain, will swim the 400 individual medley (IM), the 200 backstroke and the 200 IM He is the No. 7 seed in the 400 IM.

The three swimmers are all returning All-Americans, which means that they placed in the top 16 at the NCAA meet last year.

Walker, a sophomore, will dive from the 10-meter platform. He is making his second trip to nationals.

Walker qualified by winning a tournament two weeks ago in Buffalo.

The Crimson finished 11th as a team last year, when 11 swimmers went to the meet. This year, the focus seems to be more on individual results since there are only four Crimson participants, making it much harder to place high as a team.

"I think that they trained really well, so they will race really well,” junior, Brain Cadman said. "Individually, I think it should be a good year."

The meet will conclude on Saturday. WILLIAM P.BOHLEN
