Restriction Not the Answer

Dissent

By Jennifer M. Siegel

Aspects of final club culture are indeed contrary to the values of this College, and that is why the Staff's logic is flawed. Closing the clubs to non-members will not reduce sexism or social elitism. Because this trend is unlikely to precipitate the demise of the clubs, supporting it is akin to sticking one's head in the sand. Just as Harvard has reformed itself from an elitist, exclusively Protestant institution, the clubs must reform. Their physical plants represent enormous resources, and increased restriction only allows a small group of students to continue to hoard them. A true victory for the clubs' critics would entail positive change and not merely containment.
