Harvard Falls Behind Ivy Leaders With Loss

By Jose I. Aguilar, Contributing Writer

With 26 seconds left in the Harvard-Cornell game, Big Red quarterback Ricky Rahne's 18-yard touchdown pass to Keith Ferguson preserved the Big Red's unbeaten record (4-0, 3-0 Ivy) and dashed the hopes of the Crimson (2-2, 1-1 Ivy).

The thriller stood alone, however, in a week of blowouts throughout the Ivy League.

Quarterback James Perry's record-breaking performance led the way for Brown in a 53-30 rout over Princeton.

Perry threw for 432 yards, completing an Ivy-record 42 completions in 62 attempts. His stellar performance earned him the distinction of Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week.

The Brown victory was the first for the Bears (3-1, 2-1 Ivy) at home against Princeton (1-3, 0-2 Ivy) since 1987 and only the second win in the last 12 meetings between the schools.

Michael Malan's four touchdowns and 69 rushing yards paced the Bears' high-powered offense, which gained 545 total yards in the game. Steven Campbell led the Bears' receiving corps with 12 catches for 143 yards. The 53 points allowed by Princeton were the most since 1981.

Jeff Boulanger had a strong game at defensive tackle with five tackles--three for a loss--and a sack.

Jon Blevins led the Tigers' aerial attack with a solid 11-12, 141-yard day after relieving Tommy Crenshaw. Phil Wendler paced the Tiger offense with 11 catches for 124 yards.

In his first start at quarterback, Mike Glynn led Columbia past Bucknell with a solid performance.

Glynn completed 25 of 31 passes for 280 yards for the Lions (2-2, 0-1 Ivy) in their 10-7 win over the Bison (4-2).

Lion tailback Jonathan Reese complemented Glynn with 84 yards and the only touchdown of the game. Mark Cannan led the way with 98 yards on 8 catches while Armand Dawkins caught 9 passes for 85 yards.

The Bison were led by the rushing attack of Jabulani Powell who gained 128 yards on 23 carries. Bucknell totaled 212 total rushing yards in the game and controlled the clock, but fell to the Lions.

After falling behind 20-0 in the first half, Dartmouth could not catch Lehigh in the teams' non-conference game Saturday.

The undefeated Mountain Hawks (5-0) took a commanding lead in the first half against the Big Green (0-4, 0-1 Ivy) with great play from quarterback Phil Stambaugh, who finished with 313 yards on 35-for-44 passing and a touchdown.

Ronald Jean complemented the passing attack with 121 rushing yards on 30 carries and two touchdowns.

Brian Mann led the Big Green offense with 213 yards on 21-for-38 passing. Big Green running back Reginald Belhomme was held to 63 yards on 19 carries by the Mountain Hawk defense.

However, the Lehigh offense was restrained in the second half, thanks in part to a strong performance from Steve Varney. The Big Green linebacker totaled a game-high 15 tackles.

Kris Ryan plowed through the Fordham defense en route to a 35-18 Penn victory Saturday.

The sophomore Quaker had a breakthrough performance with 256 rushing yards on 35 carries for Penn (2-2, 1-0 Ivy) as they ran over the winless Rams (0-5). Gavin Hoffman added 135 yards on 14-29 passing for the Quakers.

The return of quarterback Joe Walland incited the Yale offense to a runaway 34-14 win over Holy Cross this past weekend.

Walland completed 13 of 22 passes for 139 yards and 2 touchdowns for the Bulldogs (3-1, 0-1 Ivy) as they tore through the Crusaders (1-4). Rashad Bartholomew rushed for 107 yards on 25 carries and two touchdowns to complement the passing game.

Holy Cross was led by Ryan Collar with 223 yards on 20-34 passing. Michael Gillis led the Crusader rushing attack with 106 yards on 16 carries.

Offensive Player of the Week

Nearing two records, Brown's Perry threw for 432 yards and an Ivy-record 42 completions in 62 attempts and three touchdowns. The senior needs seven completions for the record of 613 held by John Witkowski of Columbia. He is second on the career yardage list with 7,292 behind Witkowski's 7,849.

Defensive Player of the Week

Columbia free safety Jason Streem had his best game of the year with 10 tackles, seven unassisted, and two pass breakups. The senior also had a key interception at the goal line to stop a Bucknell scoring opportunity and preserve the 10-7 victory.
