The Harvard men's cross-country team took another positive step in its impressive 1998 campaign, finishing third in a field of 18 teams at the Iona Meet of Champions held on Saturday morning at Van Cortland Park in Bronx, N.Y.
Harvard tallied a team score of 96 in the five-mile race, finishing behind only Iona (38 points) and Dartmouth (50 points). Army was fourth with 112 points.
Four of the Crimson's six runners placed among the top 20 out of the 179 runners who competed. Freshman standout Jussi Utriainen did just that, pacing his team with a time of 25:38.5, good for seventh overall. Co-captain Scott Muoio cruised in behind him in ninth place with a time of 25:43.2
Sophomore Brendan Trombly's time of 25:53.4 was good for 14th overall, and sophomore David Martin rounded out Harvard's top-20 finishers, placing 19th in a time of 26:04.8
The women's cross-country team was impressive as well, finishing seventh out of 21 teams on the 3.3-mile course. Harvard's 193 points were 17 behind sixth-place Army and 160 behind the winning score of 33 turned in by Wake Forest.
Harvard's top overall finisher was sophomore Kathryn Moynihan, who placed 17th in a time of 18:38.7.
Captain Margaret Schotte finished second among Harvard runners, in 19th place shortly behind Moynihan in a time 18:40.8. Senta Burton was third-best Crimson runner, finishing in 41st place in a time of 19:10.0.
