Department establishes field of expertise.

Dept. chair receives search authorization from Knowles.

Dept. sends "blind letters" to leading scholars in the field asking for evaluations of the candidates.

Senior members of the department vote on whether to support the candidate.

If vote is positive, senior Faculty write letters to academic deans and Knowles regarding candidate.

Academic deans and Knowles confirm that procedural steps have been followed and prepare a dossier including the blind letters, teaching evaluations, curriculum vitae and candidate's published works.

Ad hoc committee of "experts" convenes, advises Rudenstine and Knowles about the candidate.

After consulting with Knowles, Rudenstine makes the final decision.
