Asst. Dean of Freshmen Sparagana Resigns

The Freshman Dean's Office (FDO) will be without a familiar face next semester when Assistant Dean of Freshmen Eleanor Sparagana leaves her Harvard position at the University of Virginia (UVA).

"Dean Sparagana will be a considerable loss for Harvard-she has a good rapport with students, proctors, and faculty", Dean of the College Harry R. Lewis '68 wrote in an e-mail message.

Sparagana, who serves as the resident dean for Matthews, Canaday and Weld Halls, will assume the position of director of orientation/new student programs at UVA's Charlottesville campus.

"It will be difficult to leave behind all of the wonderful people at Harvard (the students, my proctors, and my colleagues), but I am looking forward to this new opportunity because I will be able to help [UVA] develop a summer orientation program", Sparagana wrote in an e-mail message.

Lewis wrote that Sparagana's reputation for her work with students made her competitive candidate for the UVA position.

"It is a fact of life at Harvard that people of talent, who duly earn a good reputation for their work with students here, are attractive candidates for major positions at other institutions", Lewis wrote. "That is what happened in this instance".

Sparagana, who has a Ph.D. from Brandies University, began her career at Harvard as a lecturer and then as program administrator in the History and Literature Department before moving on to the position of assistant director of the Office Career Services, and ultimately the FDO.

According to Dean of Freshmen Elizabeth Studley Nathans, Sparagana made tremendous contributions both inside and out of the office.

"Within the FDO, she has taken special interest in the welfare of international students in the College, and her support to the Woodbridge Society has been important to that organization's growth", Nathans wrote in an e-mail message. "Within her area of the Yard, she had built a strong and stable team of resident proctors, and her successor will benefit from having that team in place."

Proctors enthusiastically echoed Nathans' sentiments.

I have nothing but great things to say", said John Tolsma, a proctor in Canaday. "Eleanor was a wise counsel. It's a great loss to the Yard."

Campus conservatives elected next year's Salient officers Saturday night.

Hugh P. Liebert '01 was elected publisher, Roman Martinez '01 was elected editor, Jason M. Rudinsky '01 was elected managing editor and Charles E. "Ted" Wright '01 was elected business manager.

New editors said they are pleased with the Salient but hope to bring changes.

"I think the Salient's real strength is in two things", Martinez said. "First of all we come out biweekly, which means that we're able to respond to day-to-day events".

The publication's second strength, he said, is campus issues. "We're really focused on the Harvard campus and we try to put up the arguments and responds to things here at Harvard instead of just around the country".

Rudinsky, who is in charge of overseeing layout and production, said he is considering changing the look of the paper.

Also, members of the staff have discussed bringing speakers to the campus and becoming more prominent in campus discourse.

Martinez said he would like to see conservatives raise issues and present a positive message instead of responding to issues raised by liberals.

Also elected were Deputy Editor Ross G. Douthat '02, Associate Editor Bronwen C. McShea '02, Online Editor Jorge Alex Alvarez '01, Circulation Manager Moshe Y. Spinowitz '02 and Advertising Manager Jeff A. Letalien '01. Editors assume their positions after the elections.
