To the editors:

The Undergraduate Council recently announced the "discovery" of $40,000 in the Undergraduate Council University account. I write to applaud the accurate accounting practices of the UC, and wish to demystify the notion of revenue being kept in a "secret account at an unknown location."

All student organizations holding University accounts may access their balances on record in the Dean of Students Office. It has been the practice of the College to communicate current balances to treasurers of student organizations, including the UC, as they access their accounts from term to term.

In addition, a new process of distributing statements was instituted this fall at the financial seminars held for student leaders. The case of the UC underscores the importance of student organizations keeping sound financial records and passing on correct information to their successors. SUSAN T. COOKE   Nov. 3, 1998
