On Friday the Harvard men's and women's cross country teams traveled to New York City's Van Cortlandt Park to compete in the 1998 Heptagonal Cross Country Championships. The final event of the regular season, the weekend proved disappointing as both Crimson teams finished eighth out of nine teams.
For the men, their 204 points were a few too many as they trailed Princeton (46), Dartmouth (67), Columbia (69), Brown (92), Navy (126), Pennsylvania (185) and Cornell (186). Yale rounded out the field scoring 217.
Individually, the men's team was lead by senior Scott Muoio who finished 11th with a time of 25:17. Next for the Crimson was Edward baker who contributed by placing 35th in 26:03.
"We were all disappointed," Muoio said. "Bottom line: we just didn't run as well as we should have. We've been notorious for falling apart at the end of the season. We all better get our acts together."
The women's 197 points did not fare much better as they finished eighth behind Cornell (56), Brown (63), Dartmouth (91), Princeton (121), Columbia (127), Navy (148) and Yale (163). Penn placed last with a score of (209)
The women's team was lead by the individual performance of sophomore Senta Burton and senior Margaret Schotte, who finished with times of 18:48 and 18:57, respectively. Just 1:08 off the pace, Burton placed 24th while Schotte finished 28th.
Next, both the men and women will return to Van Cortlandt Park for the NCAA Region I Championships on Nov. 14. With an outstanding performance in N.Y., the Crimson could be headed to Lawrence, Kansas for the NCAA Championships on Nov. 23.
