Yalies Finally To Get Soap

By Yale News

The generosity of John Pepper, a member of Yale's class of 1960, who is CEO of Proctor and Gamble, will likely lead to the installation of paper towel and soap dispensers in all undergraduate student bathrooms at Yale College next year.

Although the new additions to the bathrooms are "a minor detail," they will "add a great deal of comfort to residential college life," Alisa Mall, a Yale sophomore, told the Yale Daily News.

The project resulted from a number of meetings between the Yale College Council (YCC) and members of the Yale Corporation, the university's main policy-making body.

Students have campaigned for these changes as well as for the addition of shelves in bathrooms for years, but little progress was made until last year.

The idea was brought to the attention of the Corporation by Mehul Patel at a meeting last fall by Mehul Patel, a junior and chair of the YCC projects committee.

Pepper, who is a Corporation board member and whose company has a $30 billion product line, including household and cleaning products, expressed enthusiasm in the idea, Patel told the Daily News.

Final decisions on the project will be made by the Corporation and the university administration, according to Tyson Bellanger, YCC president.

"Ultimately, the students are dependent upon the generosity of Mr. Pepper. We can only hope that Mr. Pepper realizes the need for such a gift and the immeasurable benefit it would provide to students each day of the four years that they live at Yale," Belanger told the Yale Daily News.
