Finalists Named For Class Marshals

Sixteen Class Marshal finalists for the eight Class of 1998 positions were announced early this week by Diane Jellis, associate director of the Harvard Alumni Office.

Campus-wide elections, which began last night, will winnow the list down to four males and four females. The winners--who hold the posts for life--will be announced next Tuesday, according to Jellis.

The Radcliffe Class Marshal finalists are Megan P. Basil of Lowell House, Bertie H. Cheng of Pforzheimer, Carrie A. Jablonski of Kirkland, Kavita Kacholia of Adams, Erin E. O'Malley of Quincy, Crystal A. Redd of Currier, Elizabeth E. Rogers of Winthrop and Sheila Warren of Dunster.

The Harvard Class Marshal finalists are Chandler F. Arnold of Quincy House, Husani K. Barnwell of Kirkland, Nester Q. Clark of Adams, Robert M. Hyman of Kirkland, Philip R. Kaufman of Dunster, Andwele J. Lewis of Leverett, Thomas J. McLaughlin of Kirkland and Anupam Mishra of Leverett.

The final round of voting takes place all week long in each House's dining hall during lunch and dinner until lunch on Friday.

The Hare proportional-voting system--where candidates are ranked in order of preference--will be used for the Class Marshal election.

According to Jellis, the voting procedure has been successful.

"I feel things have gone smoothly," she said. "We collected over 800 ballots, which represents 50 percent of the class. It's better than most local and national elections."

The responsibilities of the Class Marshals include planning the social events for the graduating senior class and serving as the conduit between the Alumni Office and the seniors.

Barnwell said he was excited to be a finalist.

"I am honored and happy to be in this situation, and whether or not I make it, I am grateful to have gotten this far," he said.

Cheng said she was also pleased about her status as a finalist.

"This is the bomb," she said.

The results of the election will be posted on the main entrance of Wadsworth House on Tuesday, and winners will be notified by telephone.
