Although it may not possess the flamboyancy and media attention of the men's tournament, the Beanpot challenge for the women's hockey program is still a major Boston event.
"[The tournament] is just as big for the teams playing in it," Harvard captain Colleen Malek said. "Citywide there just aren't enough people who know that it exists, but it is always an intense competition."
The Harvard women's hockey team lived up to the challenge Monday as it exploded in its first round Beanpot contest for a 14-0 pounding of Boston University.
Just three minutes into the game, Harvard freshman Sally Maloney found the back of the net for an early 1-0, Harvard lead.
It was a lead the Crimson would never relinquish.
That small statement would prove to be a major understatement as Harvard registered five more goals in that period alone. Leading the offensive attack was freshman Tammy Shewchuk, who knocked in two goals and added three assists.
The second period was perhaps just a blur, or more appropriately, a nightmare, for the hapless Terriers--who boast only club team status--as they yielded five more Crimson tallies.
This time it was Harvard senior Christa Calagione who led the Harvard charge, blasting BU for three goals in the period. Sophomores Jen Gerometta and Melissa Milbert added tallies of their own in that second period.
The ruthless Harvard offensive onslaught continued throughout all 60 minutes of play. Eight different Crimson players scored and in a combined effort, the sophomore tandem of Milbert and Gerometta accounted for a total of four goals and eight assists.
"It actually turned into a difficult thing for us because after the first period our coach told us not to score," Harvard senior goaltender Whitney Smith said when talking about the blowout. "[BU] really has no legs to stand on with any of the teams in the league and this game is just a way for us to help them develop."
BU never even got close. Sharing time in net, Smith and sophomore Lauren Harris were forced to make only two saves throughout the contest.
Unlike the men's Beanpot, the women's tournament lacks not only fan support, but also the respect of Bostonians.
"There is virtually no one there," Smith said. "But there is a hope that it will develop into a similar tournament as the men's, commanding more respect."
Nonetheless, the Beanpot remains the sole chance for area women's hockey teams to grasp the Boston bragging rights.
"When I was a sophomore we won the whole thing," Malek said. "The tournament means a great deal to me and it is always great to say that you won the Beanpot."
The Crimson took a huge leap with its win over BU, but it still has one more step in its pathway towards the cup. Harvard will undoubtedly face a much greater challenge come February 11 when it meets Northeastern in the Beanpot final. First Period Har--Maloney (Shewchuk, Malek) 17:27.
