Swimmers to NCAA's

For Harvard athletics, recognition by the NCAA just seems to keep on coming.

First, there was women's basketball.

Then, there was wrestling.

Now, there's men's swimming.

The Harvard men's swimming team will be sending a school-record eight swimmers to the NCAA Championships, to be held March 28-30 at the University of Texas.

The previous mark for swimmers sent by Harvard to the NCAA Championship was seven in 1986.

Sophomore Brian Younger will don the Crimson in the 500-yard and 1650-yard freestyle for the second year in a row, and freshman Alex Kurmakov will be swimming individually in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle in addition to four relays.

Sophomore Eric Matuszak will swim individually in the 200-yard individual medley, the 100-yard freestyle and the 200-yard freestyle. Freshman Greg Wriede will race in the 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard individual medley.

Also heading to Houston will be the Crimson's 200-yard, 400-yard and 800-yard freestyle teams. Participating in the 200-yard relay will be Matuszak, Kurmakov, junior Bryon Butts and sophomore Matt Cornue.

The 400-yard squad will feature Matuszak, Kurmakov, Butts and co-captain Karl Scheer.

Rounding out Harvard's relay effort will be the 800-yard relay team of Matuszak, Kurmakov, Cornue and freshman Jon Samuel.
