WHEN THE PRICE IS RIGHT

A Summary of news, Commentary and Sometimes Comedy

By Sarah J. Schaffer

Robert R. Barker '36 and his wife, Elizabeth S. Barker, just gave an astounding $13 million to the University for the new Humanities Complex, which will combine mounds of different departments into one synthetic whole.

And the Barkers said that although their donations have been anonymous before, they just couldn't resist the lure of having their name carved on the beautiful new center.

Which leads us to one conclusion: for Bob Barker, the price was right.

We only wonder why he decided to donate his lucrative earnings from the popular daytime game show to Harvard University, of all places. He could have spent his money on one of the Showcase Showdown dream vacations to Guadalajara (brand new jeep included) or poured his money into a golf course so he could practice his "Hole in One" putts. He could have polished his "Plinko" pucks until they shined.

But all is forgiven if it's in the name of academics. Memo to Dean Knowles: just don't forget to keep the cats and dogs running around the new complex spayed and neutered.
