Women Swimmers Lead Easterns

By Eric F. Brown

The Harvard women's swimming team holds first place after the opening day of the Eastern Women's Swimming League Championships.

Wins by sophomore Keiko Iwahara in the 50-yard freestyle (23.93 seconds) and junior Kara Miller in the one-meter diving (416.35 points) yesterday paved the way for Harvard's 195.5-point showing at Brown's Smith Swim Center.

Also helping the Crimson's cause were second-place finishes in two relays--the 200 freestyle (1:36.53) and the 400 medley (3:54.76).

Brown and Yale are neck-and-neck for second and third place, with scores of 175.5 and 173.5, respectively. Rounding out the top five are Princeton (158.5) and Cornell (120.0).

Easterns is a three-day meet for the Ivy League plus Army and Navy and is considered a natural launching-pad for swimmers who hope for times low enough to qualify for Nationals.
